For any company, “keyword research” is a vital piece of the puzzle for gaining exposure and creating a successful marketing campaign.

The amount of information that you can find on the internet about the topic “keyword research” is abundant. This leaves most of the people dazed and confused on which strategy they should follow. To make your life easier, we’ve decided to let you in on some of the keyword research secrets that will help you skyrocket your business success.

Evolution of Keyword Research

“Keyword research is a practice search engine optimization (SEO) professionals use to find and research alternative search terms that people enter into search engines while looking for a similar subject.”

When search engine optimization first proliferated, people used to brainstorm about the term they’d like to rank for and then stuff the page with that term. This method worked until Google fixed a loophole in its algorithm.

Over the years, search engine algorithms have evolved and so too has the keyword research process. Keyword research has changed a lot with the addition of semantic search and Artificial Intelligence in search engine algorithms.

Keyword Research Secrets That You Should Be Following

Here are some of the secrets that will help you achieve maximum success from your online marketing strategy for your business:

  1.  Use different sources for finding potential keywords

The biggest mistake that people make while researching for keywords is using a single tool to mine potential keywords. Some of the commonly used keyword research tools are – Google Keyword Planner, SEMRush, MOZ Keyword Explorer and keywordtool.io.

While all of these services provide excellent potential keywords, it’s important to notice that they work on different data. So it is wise to use a number of tools so you don’t miss out on any potential keyword that you should be ranking for.

Apart from using these tools, you can also take advantage of Google’s Autosuggestion feature to find keywords that people are looking for:

  1. Classify keywords on the basis of search intent

One of the most important things new businesses ignore while creating an online marketing campaign is the search intent of the user. User intent can broadly be classified into three categories:

  1. Informational
  2. Transactional
  3. Navigational

You need to keep in mind only the first two categories and classify the potential keywords as informational or transactional. When the primary objective of the user is to gain knowledge about something, then it is classified under Informational intent. For e.g. “coffee making techniques.”

Whereas when a user is seeking to buy something, then it falls under the Transactional intent category. For e.g. “buy coffee mugs.”

We would suggest you maintaining a healthy mix of Informational and Transactional keywords while creating the content strategy for your website.

  1. A healthy mix of body & long tail keywords will take you a long way

Single word phrases are known as the “head keywords” and are generally the root keyword around which body and long tail keywords are formed. We wouldn’t recommend you to target such keywords as they are extremely competitive and have the lowest conversion rate, as the intent of the users is unclear.

Body keywords are 2-3 word phrases that are more specific than head keywords and have decent searches per month. They are less competitive than head keywords.

Long tail keywords are 4+ word phrases that give us a clear idea of the users’ intent and therefore have the highest conversion rate. They have less people searching for them and have low competition as well.

As per Rand Fishkin, the Co-founder of Moz – “The long tail of search can be a mysterious place to explore, often lacking the volume data that we usually rely on to guide us. But the keyword phrases you can uncover there are worth their weight in gold, often driving highly valuable traffic to your site.”

You should be targeting a healthy mix of long tail and body keywords to get the maximum returns from your online marketing campaign. I hope these keyword research secrets will help you craft a hugely successful online marketing campaign.
